Pes Anserine bursitis

The Sartorius, Gracilis and Semitendinosis tendons insert on the medial side of the proximal tibia and resembles a “goose foot”, hence the usage of the Latin description Pes Anserine (goose foot).

The Pes Anserine bursa may become inflamed due to trauma, overuse or due to medial knee arthritis and present with Pes Anserine bursitis.

Associations include:
  • Knee arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Meniscus protrusion and medial collateral ligament displacement
Clinical presentation:
  • Medial knee pain
  • Swelling and tenderness

Investigations

  • Where clinically indicated X-rays may demonstrate underlying knee arthritis
  • Ultrasound will show bursa swelling
  • MRI will show underlying meniscus abnormalities when clinically warranted
